The headlight's glare lit up the windows of the house as he pulled into the driveway. Finally. Two weeks of helping set up one of the new off world beta camps officially over. Back to good old alpha prime, numero uno, Earth.
Home.
He flexed his hands against the steering wheel. They still felt numb. And he had to grab twice at the keys before he got them to turn and pull loose. Whose bright idea had PR3-295 been anyway? Next time he was backing Ferretti's vote for finding Planet Tahiti, no question.
He kicked the front door closed with a heavy boot and staggered up the stairs. Hitting the top of the landing, Jack paused. His door was closed.
Reaching out he slowly pushed the bedroom door back, trying to be quiet. The light from the hall touched on a figure sleeping in the bed.
Daniel.
He was fast asleep. Arms wrapped around a pillow, face buried against it. All Jack could see was the faint shine of Daniel's hair from the doorway and a long sweep of bare skin, the sheet having lost the war and slid down to his waist at some point in the night.
Jack hadn't been sure he'd make it back that night. Or even before the weekend for that matter. But they'd pushed things hard and gotten it all done. And now he was home. It took him a moment to realize he was just standing there watching the slow rise and fall of Daniel's back, its rhythm practically hypnotic to his numb brain. He dropped his bag, shoving off the rest of his gear, letting it fall to the carpet, marking his path. Jack climbed into the bed, putting his arm around Daniel, spooning against his bare back. God, he was warm. Like the hot sun compared to the wintery chill of where he'd just been.
Daniel half woke at the dip of the mattress, but his eyes never opened. "Jack, you're back," he mumbled.
"Shh...go back to sleep."
"Cold." Daniel shivered a little.
Jack started to pull away. "Sorry. Ice planet zero got me through to the bone.
Daniel made a little stopping motion, drawing Jack's arm closer around him. Tucking the other man's hand against the heat of his chest."No, s'okay. Like you here." And snuggled back to sleep.
Jack smiled and buried his face in the nape of Daniel's neck. The hairs tickling his nose and hinting at the soap Daniel used. It was something green smelling and clean. Absolutely nothing like the wet wool and icy metallic smells of the past week. A much better place to be.
"Happy New Year," he whispered and closed his eyes to sleep too.
"Uh-huh...happy," the sleep fogged voice sighed back.
